Are California's Minimum Requirements for Auto Insurance Too Low?

I came across this article the other day and found it encouraging. I understand the need for all drivers to carry auto liability insurance. For that to happen, coverage must be affordable. Given today's economy, many drivers are trying to save money and are purchasing the minimum-required coverage. Compare the chart following the article. You will see that, beside Florida, California's minimum liability insurance requirements are the lowest in the country. I have recently had several wrongful death cases where the other driver carried miminum coverage. It is very difficult to tell a family (especially one with several young children) that not only did they lose their primary source of income in the collision but, as a result of the other driver only carrying minimum coverage, they no longer have a source for money with which to rebuild their lives.

I hope that other States start to reevaluate their minimum auto liability requirements. For a few extra hundred dollars per year, victims of collisions can be better compensated for their loss.
